Agassi withdraws from Sydney Games
NEW YORK --7 September 2000
Olympic champion Andre
Agassi has withdrawn from the Sydney Games in order to stay close to
home with his mother, Elizabeth, and sister, Tammee, who are both battling breast cancer,
the US Tennis Association announced on Wednesday. "For personal reasons, as a
consequence of a family medical situation, I will not be able to participate in the
upcoming Sydney Olympics," Agassi said in a statement released by the USTA. "My
time and attention should be with my family during this period. "I wish all of the US
athletes great success and know that you will return more enriched by your
experience."
The 30-year-old Agassi, who won the gold medal at the
1996 Atlanta games, also was the defending champion at the US Open but he went out in the
second round to Arnaud Clement of France. Agassi and girlfriend Steffi Graf are the only
players in tennis history to have captured all four Grand Slam titles and an Olympic gold
medal during their careers. Graf did it all in one year in 1988, a feat that has been
called the "Golden Slam." The USTA will make a decision as to whether to replace
Agassi on the American squad in the next few days.
