Sydney cuisine

Food for all the family

Dining out in a strange city can be a trial, especially when the only child-friendly restaurants you know are fast food eateries featuring lurid clowns and fat-laden meals.

Fortunately for parents wanting a meal to remember (fondly) Sydney boasts a reassuring number of family-friendly restaurants that include a children's menu or cater specifically for the kids. Here's just a selection: there are many more.

The Aquarium

Very reasonably-priced, with a casual atmosphere, a postcard view and, best of all, a toy store downstairs, this is close to restaurant perfection for families. The menu offers an assortment of seafood and pub-style food (fish'n'chips, T-bone steaks, three veg or salads) and an intelligent children's menu that should keep even the fussiest rug-rat happy. Be wary of the dessert menu - it's huge.

The Blue Swimmer

This Italian seafood restaurant in Sydney's south, is geared to provide for large family gatherings, especially special events such as birthdays. While not cheap, the food is excellent, the house specialty being the mixed seafood platter for two (A$79 or A$89) – featuring Blue Swimmer crabs, and worth every dollar. A solid wine list including some fine local labels makes it an excellent choice for visitors. While the place is kid-friendly, it may not be perfect for the tiniest of tots.

Gledswood Homestead

The ideal destination for a family day trip, this farm-cum-restaurant lies in the heart of NSW's fertile Macarthur district, an hour's drive south-west of Sydney. Here, you and the children can take part in a variety of rural activities: sheep-shearing, sheep-dog working, supervised horse-riding, even boomerang-throwing (and a spot of wine-tasting for the grown-ups). If you'd prefer a structured excursion, day tours — meals included — can be booked in advance.
