The Torch Relay officially began with the lighting of the Olympic Torch in Olympia, Greece on 11 May.
Cloudy skies prevented the flame's traditional lighting but a Greek actress dressed as a
high priestess handed a flame lit the day before at the site where the ancient
games were held 2,700 years ago to Greek high jumper Lambros Papakostas. Holding
high the Sydney torch, a turquoise, white and silver boomerang, Papakostas ran from the
ancient stadium to begin the relay that will end on 15 September at the Opening Ceremony
in Sydney.
The arrival of the Olympic flame in Sydney is attracting immense international and national media interest. To accommodate the many media organisations planning to cover this event, a number of specific media vantage points have been arranged along the relay's path through Sydney on September 14-15. A separate accreditation process has been introduced and accreditation will be allocated on a priority basis by Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch Relay Media Relations. Please note that roads are likely to be closed from 5:00pm on 14 September so early arrival at the media zones is required. Due to the amount of people expected in the city, it will not be possible to move between zones so please select only one zone per person or crew. Accreditation passes will be issued to media at September 11 media briefings (details to be advised). Media must attend these briefings to receive accreditation passes. |
